Dad is holding it upright and the baby has its little legs bent, like a <strong>little frog<\/strong>, to the left and right \u2014 just as all newborns do.<\/p>\n<p>Dad doesn&#8217;t need to put his hand under the baby&#8217;s bottom; he simply supports its little back. So, even though the baby is upright, <strong>no weight is placed on any part of its body<\/strong> \u2014 it simply rests against dad&#8217;s chest.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly the position the baby is in, upright, inside an ergonomic carrier \u2014 whether a ring sling, a pouch, a wrap or a mei tai.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bw-clear\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"bw-fig full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/babywearing.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/natural_positions_for_newborn_babies.jpg\" alt=\"Just like in your arms\"><figcaption>Just like in your arms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>In a ring sling<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"bw-fig full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/babywearing.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3_newborn_baby_marsippo_podia_mesa.jpg\" alt=\"Babies upright with legs inside the carrier\"><figcaption>In a ring sling, with the legs inside<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the legs inside or outside in a <strong>ring sling<\/strong>, the newborns in the photos have exactly the same position as the baby in dad&#8217;s arms. Their knees are high, their legs bent, and they rest comfortably against the parent&#8217;s chest. In place of the hand behind the back, the soft fabric of the carrier plays that role.<\/p>\n<p>The baby is in a natural position, with no part of its body burdened \u2014 neither the back nor the genitals. It doesn&#8217;t &#8220;dangle&#8221; from anywhere; it almost &#8220;lies&#8221; against the person wearing it, even while upright! Perhaps the photos are to blame (many show older babies), or the fact that babies in a mei tai are in an &#8220;upright&#8221; position. I hope it&#8217;s becoming clear that the <strong>mei tai is suitable even for newborns<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"bw-fig full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/babywearing.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/6_neogennhta_mwra_se_meitai.jpg\" alt=\"Newborns upright in a mei tai\"><figcaption>Newborns in a mei tai, upright<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The difference with conventional carriers<\/h2>\n<p>In slings, the baby is just as we would hold it in our arms, even when upright. It doesn&#8217;t &#8220;dangle&#8221; from the crotch, the legs don&#8217;t hang straight down, the back isn&#8217;t rigid and stretched, the baby isn&#8217;t forced into any unnatural posture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We would hold our baby in our arms upright, even a newborn!<\/strong> There are babies who, because of reflux, spend most of the day upright in their parent&#8217;s arms.
