As temperatures start to drop a little, walks with your baby in a carrier<\/strong> become much easier. Especially later in the afternoon, you can stay out longer without either of you getting uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

And if your walk includes cobbled streets, a dirt road or an easy trail, a baby carrier is usually much more practical than a pushchair.<\/p>\n

Your baby is on you, your hands are free, and you don’t have to stop every couple of metres to wonder whether the wheels will make it over stones, steps or potholes.<\/p>\n

Now that the peak summer heat is starting to ease, walks with a carrier become easier.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Which baby carrier?<\/h2>\n

If you know you’ll be walking for quite a while, or that the ground won’t be completely even, choose a carrier that distributes the weight over both shoulders.<\/p>\n

A mei tai<\/a>, for example, distributes the weight very well and adjusts easily to the body of whoever is wearing it. If two parents take turns using it, it’s especially practical because there are no settings to change.<\/p>\n

The same applies to a properly adjusted buckle carrier<\/strong>. The Ergobaby Omni<\/strong><\/a> or KinderHop Multi-Grow<\/strong><\/a>, for example, are very comfortable choices for longer walks.<\/p>\n

5 things to keep in mind<\/h2>\n

  1. Don’t overdress your baby.<\/strong>
    It’s easy to think, “Autumn’s here”, and start adding extra layers. But if you’re still wearing short sleeves, put your baby in a short-sleeved bodysuit too. Remember that your baby also has the warmth of your body. You can check their temperature on their chest or the back of their neck rather than their hands and feet, which are often cooler.<\/li>\n
  2. Choose your route with the terrain in mind.<\/strong>
    An easy trail is one thing, a demanding hike is another. With your baby on you, you want ground you can walk on safely. Your hands may be free, but routes that require climbing or balancing are better left for another day.<\/li>\n
  3. Check your baby’s position as always.<\/strong>
    Their face should remain visible and their airways clear. Don’t let your baby become too “buried” in the carrier. The basics of correct positioning don’t change.<\/li>\n
  4. Wear sturdy shoes.<\/strong>
    With your baby on you, your centre of gravity shifts a little. On stones, dirt and downhill stretches, sturdy shoes with good grip can make a big difference.<\/li>\n
  5. Take water and remember your limits.<\/strong>
    Just because the summer heat has gone doesn’t mean you won’t get warm while walking, especially with your baby’s weight on you.
    \nAnd you certainly don’t need to plan a hike to enjoy it. It might be half an hour in your local park, a walk through the village, or a stroll down to the sea and back. For a baby, there are things to see and hear everywhere.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
