Aplique Cupcake

Our appliqués are not ready-made designs; we compose each one from scratch every time, using fabric in matching colours and often embroidering the details. Each piece is drawn separately on paper, the design is transferred onto the fabric through a special process, the fabric is carefully cut, overlocked so it won’t fray, and sewn with a special stabiliser so it won’t pucker. The price varies depending on the design and on the number of shapes (essentially the number of pieces that make up the design).

Because the appliqués are made from cotton fabrics (woven, not knits), it isn’t enough to simply cut and stitch them, as you might with felt or a jersey. Done that way, they would be ruined at the first wash. Instead, the appliqués on the Asteraki carriers are properly finished, not with a plain zigzag, but with a satin stitch.

A note just for ring slings: If the design is placed directly onto the fabric of the sling, keep in mind that the stitching will show on the back (the wrong side) of the tail. This isn’t the case if we put the appliqué onto a pocket or accent, as then the stitches on the wrong side will be hidden within the double layer of the pocket. If you don’t want to add a pocket or accent to your ring sling, we suggest choosing small designs, because the tail gathers as it falls and a large shape may be hidden, not always fully visible unless you “spread out” the tail.

If you’re putting this design on a mei tai, it will look just fine.
If you’re choosing it for a ring sling, our suggestion is to also add a pocket, or an accent (a solid-colour band of fabric across the full width of the tail), onto which this appliqué will go.
