General guidelines for carrying your baby comfortably and safely in a baby carrier
Important note: Besides the instructions that come with every Asteraki and some videos you’ll find on this site, there are special instructional videos with guidance that are ONLY for Asteraki carriers. They are not on this site and are not public on YouTube. To see them, contact us with your purchase details and we’ll send them to you. We also remind you that, apart from training appointments, we can look together at whatever is troubling you via video call too (Skype, Facebook, Viber, etc.).
Remember that for anything that worries you about how to carry your baby, we’ll be very happy to help. See what the mums and dads who asked for help and got their questions answered said at the end of the year:
What should I watch out for when carrying my baby?
“Mum, what’s the weather like?”
Overheating is a common risk for babies in carriers. Don’t forget that the baby in the carrier feels the warmth of your body and that the carrier’s fabric counts as a layer of clothing. If, on the other hand, it is very cold, watch the baby’s head and little feet, which are usually exposed and need extra covering.
“Mum, when are we going to eat?”
Babies calm down in the carrier and it is very common for them to fall asleep in it. Make sure (especially for newborns) that they eat enough and that they don’t sleep too much and prefer their nap over their food!
“Mum, be careful with me!”
Baby carriers are perfectly safe as long as they are used correctly. Make sure you follow the instructions for each position correctly while carrying your baby, and check again that everything is fine once you are done.
Only use the position that is suitable for your baby’s age each time, regardless of the type of sling you have.
The positioning of a newborn in particular must be done carefully (there must be at least a finger’s distance between the baby’s chin and chest, and full support of the head).
In every case you must make sure your baby is breathing freely and that its face is never completely covered by fabric. Be sure to read carefully about choosing a suitable carrier for your baby’s safety.
Choose your activities carefully when carrying your baby (do not get on a bicycle/motorbike while carrying your baby, be careful how you bend down – bend your knees, not your waist, do not hold hot drinks, do not drive…). It makes you feel comfortable, but never forget that you are carrying your baby!
Always remember that you are responsible for your baby’s safety and that you should be as careful as you would be with any carrier, or as careful as you would be if you were simply holding your baby in your arms.

Will it be hard to learn?
It’s easy! Don’t be afraid – carrying your baby is simpler than it looks. Babywearing is a bit like learning to put on your shoes. When we were children, our parents taught us how to put our shoes on properly. To put the right shoe on the right foot, to wear them correctly, to tie our laces carefully so we would not trip. And now, putting on our shoes is something very simple! It is the same with babywearing: there are rules we need to follow in order to be safe, both us and our children, but with a little practice it turns out to be very easy!
Where can I find instructions?
For your Asteraki, apart from the instructions it comes with and the videos you’ll find on the site, there are instructional videos, in Greek, that are hidden and locked; the only way to see them is to receive them from us. Contact us so we can send them to you!
