Meeting group for babywearing

For help, support, discussion, and sharing of ideas

Babywearing meetingA famous anthropologist, Ashley Montagu, put forward the idea that “for a period equal to that of pregnancy, babies should live in conditions similar to those they had in their mum’s womb”. Indeed, in carriers held close, babies enjoy the same warmth, sense the movement of our body, hear the sound of our heartbeat and feel safe and comfortable.

In Greece, since 2007, there has been a group of parents aiming to inform and support people on babywearing matters. Taking part in the meetings is free and is not intended to sell or promote specific products/slings. It is addressed to parents who want to discuss any topic related to babywearing, ask for help with specific problems and try on carriers (slings) with their baby or with special model dolls.

This is of interest to you if…

  • Help with a long wrapyour little one always wants to be held and you want your hands free
  • you already have an older child who demands your attention while you look after the baby
  • you are pregnant and want to learn more about babywearing so you can hold the baby you are expecting
  • you are interested in a baby carrier, but hesitate to buy before seeing what it is like up close and before trying it on
  • your little one suffers from colic or reflux, or is hard to soothe and you are forced to hold them all the time
  • you want to learn how to use whatever you have at home (a pashmina, a scarf, a bath towel) to keep your hands free while holding your little one
  • you already have a carrier (a sling, or another baby carrier) but you don’t know how to use it and it is gathering dust in the wardrobe
  • you want to learn even more ways to use the carriers you have
  • your little one has “tight hips” or a predisposition to hip dysplasia, or you are looking for an alternative to the usual “vertical” carriers that leave the baby’s legs dangling down, putting a lot of weight on the lower part of the spine
  • you want to learn to sew carriers and save some money
  • you are a fan of babywearing and want to show other mums how you wear your baby

Unique in Greece

The babywearing.gr group is the first (and so far the only) group for babywearing that has operated since 2006 with the approval of an International NGO for babywearing, meeting monthly for educational purposes only. The meeting is coordinated by Stella Stamoulaki, the first (and so far the only) certified babywearing consultant in Greece, after training from the babywearing school in London.ekpaideusi_gia_marsipoMum and baby in the carrierMum at a babywearing meeting
