How to carry your baby on your hip with a sling carrier (above the hip)

Many parents prefer to carry their baby on the hip, above the hip, just as we often hold our children in our arms. This is a variation of the upright/seated position with legs out, in which the baby “hugs” the body of the mum or dad carrying them with their legs.

This position is suitable for babies who can support their head and who have at least momentary lateral support (that is, from about 4 months and up).

There are two ways to carry our baby in this position and they are shown in detail in the video below.

a. In the first method, we guide the baby to the hip right from the start, holding them inside the sling.

b. In the second method, we place the baby in the upright position in front of us and then “turn” them to the hip together with the carrier. That is why we start with the rings a little higher than where we want them, so that after the “turn” they end up in the right spot.

Babies love this position very much, especially at older ages, because they can see around them more easily.

It also closely resembles the way we hold our baby in our arms anyway.

Hip carry with Asteraki Sling - so baby can see

The hip position in a handmade ring sling cuddle carrier by Asteraki sling is especially convenient for older babies who want to look around. It is the position in which we usually hold an older baby in our arms, and from there they can see without having to twist their torso.
