“Buddha” position (facing forward) – Pouch

Note: In the photos below I am already 5 months pregnant and my Vasilis (15 kilos) is way too big for this position! I am using a special model doll!

This position is suitable for babies who support their own head (from about 2-3 months).

This position, in which the baby looks outwards, is quite controversial. Some argue that the outward-facing position (the fact that the baby does not see mum, combined with the fact that it receives many stimuli looking outwards) creates stress, especially in small babies (overstimulation). Other studies claim that this only applies to strollers and not to carriers (since then the baby feels mum). This is probably a matter of personal decision!

1. Put on your pouch according to the instructions, with the seam in front of you.

2. Take your baby in your arms and hold it in front of you, facing outwards. “Fold” its little legs onto its tummy. (Make sure its back rests against your chest, so that it does not lean forward).

3. Lower it slowly into the pouch, making sure it goes inside the “pocket”. Notice that the baby’s bottom is the lowest part of it inside the pouch, while its little legs are up high, crossed on its tummy (like a “sitting Buddha”).

4. Especially in this position, you must be very careful when you bend forward. It is best to hold your baby with one hand and to bend by bending your knees and not your waist! If you feel that the baby needs to be closer to you, try the “trick: shoulder flip”!

To us they may look a bit “cramped”, but in this position babies are very happy, because they get the chance to look at the world around them. It is also a position that helps babies with colic a lot.

The baby’s little legs should be crossed high on its tummy.
