How to breastfeed with your pouch

You can breastfeed your baby in the pouch and so have the freedom to move, to walk, or to take care of your older child while you nurse. There are two ways to do this:

A. Starting from the “lying-down position”: especially if your baby is small, while they’re lying down, you’ll lower the inner side of the pouch and raise the outer one. This way you’ll also have more discretion. Their back and head should be in the same line and the baby’s whole body should be turned toward your body.

B. Starting from the “sitting position”: Holding your baby, you’ll slowly bring both their little legs to the same side (the side on which you have the pouch on your shoulder), laying their body down (their little head) on the other side. You can support the child’s head with your elbow.

Essentially, there are two differences between the two ways above:

– With the first way the baby’s little legs are inside the pouch, while with the second way they come out the other side.

– With the first way the child’s head is on the same shoulder on which you’ve put on your pouch, while with the second way the child’s head is on the opposite side.

Note: Breastfeeding your baby on the sofa is “a lesson for beginner moms.” Breastfeeding your baby in a sling is a lesson for “advanced babywearers”! First you and your baby need to “learn” breastfeeding together, and then use your pouch to help you.

If you need to breastfeed your baby completely hands-free (e.g. to take care of your older child at the same time) or if you need discreet cover (e.g. to breastfeed in public), you might prefer to use an Asteraki Ring sling in the breastfeeding position.
