How to know if your pouch is the right size for you

Note: Even though in the photos below I am already 6 months pregnant and my belly has already started to affect the pouch size that is suitable for me, I believe you will be able to get a good idea of how the Pouch should sit on you so that it is the right size.

Your Pouch is the right size if its lowest part (usually the seam) with your baby inside reaches roughly to your navel (or up to two fingers lower). The right size in a Pouch matters a lot for your comfort and your baby’s comfort.

If your Pouch is too big, it will “sway” as you walk, your legs will hit the baby pushing them out and it will not be comfortable; it will tire you out very quickly. If your Pouch is too small it will be very difficult to put the child inside and it will “dig into” their little legs. (Your Pouch is too small if its lowest part, with your baby inside, reaches above your navel).

Note: The size of the Pouch depends on the size of the person wearing it and not on the age or size of the baby. With the same Pouch you can wear your baby from newborn until about 3 years old! In the photo, Rea (7 kilos) and Vasilis (17.5 kilos) with the same Pouch! The weight and age of the baby do not affect it at all!

Right size: The lowest part of the Pouch (the baby’s bottom in this position) is at your navel.

Right size: The baby is at the height at which you would hold them in your arms (you can reach to kiss them on the head). You can sit down comfortably while wearing your baby.

Right size: The Pouch without the baby inside reaches a little below the navel.

Bigger than it should be: The lowest part of the Pouch (the baby’s bottom in this position) is much lower than the navel (roughly at the pelvic bones).

Bigger than it should be: The baby is low! If you held them in your arms at this height, your arms would have to be almost stretched out in front of you and it would definitely be uncomfortable. You cannot reach to kiss them without having to bend over. You cannot sit down while wearing your baby.

Bigger than it should be: The Pouch without the baby inside reaches even lower than the pelvic bones.

Note: As you will have seen, to determine the right size, we look at the height of the baby on your body and not at the opening of the Pouch in front of you (especially without the baby), as this can be misleading! In the photos below, it is clearly shown that before I put the baby in my Pouch, its opening in front of my chest is no more than a few centimeters. Nevertheless, my baby fits wonderfully inside (both my babies, in fact!), even in the Buddha position that puts the whole baby inside the Pouch!

A trick to “narrow” your Pouch: If your Pouch is slightly bigger than it should be, then try wearing it this way! You will find that it makes your Pouch quite a bit smaller so that you feel better!

In any case, and even though it is important for your comfort to get the right size for your Pouch, keep in mind that one could wear two different sizes, just as one would with two tops: one may be a little big and the other may be a little small, but both will fit you!

So it is also a matter of preference! Some people like them “snug” and others like them “roomy”!
